BMI for Bariatric Surgery

If you are considering bariatric surgery, you will need to know your BMI to see if you qualify for a procedure. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery states the following prerequisites for a bariatric surgery:

  • BMI ≥ 40, or more than 100 pounds overweight.
  • BMI ≥ 35 and at least one or more obesity-related co-morbidities such as type II diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, or heart disease.
  • Inability to achieve a healthy weight loss sustained for a period of time with prior weight loss efforts.

The type of procedure you choose can also depend on your BMI.  For instance, for patients with BMI's on the lower end of the obesity spectrum, Lap Band Surgery shows encouraging results.  You can learn more about which surgeries might be right for your BMI level here.

If you have already undergone a bariatric procedure, it is still useful to know your current BMI in order to keep track of your weight loss progress.  Calculating your BMI is just one step in your journey towards a healthy life - use our free calculator below to find your BMI.
